1. Introduction
With the increasing global awareness of environmental protection and the pursuit of sustainable development, the construction industry is undergoing a significant transformation towards green building. Green building materials play a crucial role in reducing the environmental impact of construction projects, conserving resources, and improving indoor air quality. Polyurethane sponges, due to their excellent properties such as high elasticity, good insulation, and sound – absorption capabilities, are widely used in green building materials. However, the dyes used in traditional polyurethane sponges may contain harmful substances, which pose risks to the environment and human health. Therefore, the development and application of eco – friendly polyurethane sponge dyes have become an important research direction in the field of green building materials. This article will systematically introduce the characteristics, applications, and prospects of eco – friendly polyurethane sponge dyes for green building materials.
2. Product Parameters of Eco – Friendly Polyurethane Sponge Dyes
Eco – friendly polyurethane sponge dyes have specific physical and chemical properties that distinguish them from traditional dyes. These properties ensure their environmental friendliness, color fastness, and compatibility with polyurethane sponges. Table 1 summarizes the main product parameters of typical eco – friendly polyurethane sponge dyes:

Parameter
Description
Typical Values
Dye Type
Classified into natural dyes (such as plant – based dyes, microbial – derived dyes) and synthetic eco – friendly dyes (such as azo – free dyes, water – based dyes)
Natural: Indigo from plants, carotenoids; Synthetic: Azo – free reactive dyes, water – based disperse dyes
Color Fastness
Evaluated by light fastness, washing fastness, and rubbing fastness, indicating the dye’s resistance to color fading under different conditions
Light fastness: 4 – 7 (scale of 1 – 8); Washing fastness: 3 – 5; Rubbing fastness: 3 – 4
Particle Size
Affects the dispersion of the dye in the polyurethane sponge matrix; smaller particle sizes usually lead to better color uniformity
0.1 – 1.2 μm
pH Value
Influences the stability of the dye and its interaction with the polyurethane sponge; a near – neutral pH is often preferred for better compatibility
6.0 – 8.0
Solubility
Refers to the ability of the dye to dissolve or disperse in the relevant media during the dyeing process; eco – friendly dyes often have good water – solubility or dispersion in water – based systems
Water – based dyes: High solubility in water; Disperse dyes: Good dispersion in water with the help of dispersants
Thermal Stability
Determines the dye’s resistance to color change or degradation during high – temperature processing of polyurethane sponges, such as curing and drying
Can withstand temperatures of 120 – 180°C without significant color change
Toxicity
Measured by the content of harmful substances, such as heavy metals (lead, mercury, cadmium), aromatic amines, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs); eco – friendly dyes meet strict safety standards with extremely low or no content of these substances
Heavy metals: ≤ 0.001% (by weight); VOCs: ≤ 50 g/L

These parameters are crucial for evaluating the performance and quality of eco – friendly polyurethane sponge dyes. For example, high color fastness ensures that the colored polyurethane sponges maintain their appearance during long – term use in buildings, while low toxicity guarantees the safety of indoor environments and the health of building occupants [1].
3. Applications of Eco – Friendly Polyurethane Sponge Dyes in Green Building Materials
3.1 In Insulation Materials
Polyurethane sponges are commonly used as insulation materials in green buildings due to their low thermal conductivity. Eco – friendly dyes can endow these insulation sponges with colors without sacrificing their insulation performance.
For instance, in building exterior wall insulation systems, colored polyurethane insulation sponges can serve both insulation and decorative functions. A study by Li et al. (2020) compared the thermal insulation performance of polyurethane sponges dyed with different eco – friendly dyes. Table 2 shows the experimental results:

Dye Type
Thickness of Sponge (mm)
Thermal Conductivity (W/(m·K))
Color
Azo – free Reactive Dye
50
0.025
Blue
Plant – based Natural Dye
50
0.026
Green
Conventional Dye (for comparison)

The results indicate that eco – friendly dyes have little impact on the thermal conductivity of polyurethane sponges, which means they can be used to create colorful insulation materials while maintaining excellent insulation performance [2].
3.2 In Sound – Absorbing Materials
In green buildings, good sound – absorption performance is essential for creating a quiet and comfortable indoor environment. Polyurethane sponges with high porosity are widely used as sound – absorbing materials, and eco – friendly dyes can be applied to these sponges to meet aesthetic requirements.
A research project by Wang et al. (2019) investigated the sound – absorption coefficient of polyurethane sound – absorbing sponges dyed with different eco – friendly dyes. Table 3 presents the data:

Dye Type
Sound – absorption Coefficient (at 1000 Hz)
Color Fastness to Rubbing
Microbial – derived Dye
0.75

Water – based Disperse Dye
0.73

Traditional Dye (control group)

The results show that eco – friendly dyes not only maintain the sound – absorption performance of polyurethane sponges but also exhibit better color fastness to rubbing compared to some traditional dyes. This makes colored eco – friendly polyurethane sound – absorbing sponges suitable for various interior decoration applications in green buildings [3].
3.3 In Decorative Components
In green building interior decoration, polyurethane sponges can be used to make decorative components such as wall panels, ceiling tiles, and decorative moldings. Eco – friendly dyes can provide a wide range of colors and patterns for these components, enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the building interior.
For example, in a green office building project, eco – friendly azo – free reactive dyes were used to color polyurethane sponge – based wall panels. The colored wall panels not only added a vibrant atmosphere to the office space but also met the strict environmental protection requirements of green buildings. A survey of building occupants showed that 85% of them preferred the colored decorative components over the plain ones, indicating the positive impact of eco – friendly dyes on the user experience [4].
4. Environmental and Safety Performance of Eco – Friendly Polyurethane Sponge Dyes
4.1 Environmental Impact
Eco – friendly polyurethane sponge dyes have significantly lower environmental impacts compared to traditional dyes. Natural dyes, such as those extracted from plants, are renewable resources, and their extraction and use generally have a minimal impact on the environment. Synthetic eco – friendly dyes are designed to reduce or eliminate the use of harmful substances. For example, azo – free dyes avoid the potential release of carcinogenic aromatic amines during the dyeing process and the life cycle of the dyed products.
A life – cycle assessment (LCA) study by Zhao et al. (2021) compared the environmental impacts of eco – friendly and traditional dyes used in polyurethane sponges. The results showed that eco – friendly dyes reduced the emissions of greenhouse gases, water pollutants, and air pollutants by 30 – 50% on average during the production, use, and disposal stages [5].
4.2 Safety Performance
In terms of safety, eco – friendly polyurethane sponge dyes are non – toxic or have extremely low toxicity. They do not contain heavy metals and harmful organic compounds that can pose risks to human health. In indoor environments, the use of these dyes ensures that there are no harmful substance emissions, which is beneficial for the health of building occupants, especially in schools, hospitals, and residential buildings.
Moreover, during the manufacturing process, workers are less exposed to hazardous substances, reducing the risk of occupational diseases. For example, water – based eco – friendly dyes have low volatility, minimizing the inhalation risk of volatile organic compounds for workers [6].
