DSM acquires Shangshan New Materials to lay out the overall layout of China’s photovoltaic market

Huicong Plastics News: Royal DSM Group (DSM) of the Netherlands recently held a press conference in Shanghai to announce the wholly-owned acquisition of Suzhou Shangshan New Material Technology Co., Ltd.

Shangshan Technology is a manufacturer that uses co-extrusion technology to produce high-performance, innovative solar photovoltaic (PV) backsheets. The parties did not disclose financial details of the acquisition.

“This acquisition is not only consistent with DSM’s sustainable development strategy, but also in line with China’s 13th Five-Year Plan for Energy Development. It further proves DSM Group’s support for China’s clean and green energy market.” Di said Dr. Jiang Weiming, President of Sman China.

Thanks to policy support for renewable energy, China’s newly installed photovoltaic power generation capacity and cumulative installed capacity reached 34.54 million kilowatts and 77.42 million kilowatts respectively in 2016, ranking first in the world in both indicators. According to the requirements of the “Thirteenth Five-Year Plan for Energy Development”, China’s solar power generation scale will reach 110 million kilowatts in 2020.

The “Energy Storage Development Trends and Opportunities in Emerging Markets” report recently released by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) also stated that energy storage will develop rapidly in emerging markets in the next five years at a growth rate of 40%. India and China will lead the energy storage market development in South Asia and East Asia respectively.

The industry expects that with the Chinese government’s vigorous promotion of sustainable economic development, the prospects for China’s photovoltaic industry and solar module market remain optimistic. For multinational companies that are optimistic about this market, entering the market from the upstream of the supply chain by acquiring local technology leaders will help them better seize the opportunities in the Chinese photovoltaic market.
