Applications of Benzyl Alcohol_Industrial Additives

Benzyl alcohol, referred to as BA, is a colorless, low-viscosity liquid with strong solubility (molecular formula: C6H5CH2OH). Also called benzyl alcohol. Benzyl alcohol is the simplest fatty alcohol containing a phenyl group and can be regarded as hydroxymethyl-substituted benzene or phenyl-substituted methanol. It is a colorless, transparent and viscous liquid with a faint aromatic odor. It is polar, low-toxic, and has low vapor pressure, so it is used as an alcohol solvent. Slightly soluble in water (4 g/100 mL), miscible with organic solvents such as ethanol, ether, and benzene chloroform.

Uses of benzyl alcohol:

Benzyl alcohol is an excellent medium-boiling point solvent. Benzyl alcohol is a very useful fixative and an indispensable spice in the preparation of jasmine, moonflower, ylang-ylang and other flavors. Used to prepare soap; daily cosmetic fragrance. However, benzyl alcohol can slowly and naturally oxidize, and part of it generates benzaldehyde and anisole, which makes commercially available products often have an almond aroma, so it should not be stored for a long time. Benzyl alcohol is widely used in industrial chemical production. Used as coating solvent; photographic water-based amino resin contrast agent; polyvinyl chloride stabilizer; medicine; synthetic resin solvent; solvent for vitamin B injection; preservative for ointments or liquids. It can be used as desiccant for nylon yarn, fiber and plastic film, dye, cellulose ester, casein solvent, and intermediate for preparing benzyl ester or ether. At the same time, it is widely used in pen making (ballpoint pen oil); paint solvents, etc.

Advantages of benzyl alcohol used as epoxy diluent:

Epoxy resin curing agent 1,3-BAC, AEP, IPDA, D-230 and other necessary solvents for modification; the material itself is non-toxic (can be used for human injection reagents); has a high boiling point and is not easy to volatilize, and after curing due to Benzyl alcohol has strong polarity and is very compatible with epoxy resins without migration. Benzyl alcohol can promote the reaction between epoxy resin and amines and speed up the reaction. Benzyl alcohol has good hydrophobic properties. , can significantly improve the gloss of the coating and reduce the occurrence of whitening; benzyl alcohol can improve the toughness of the cured product.

Performance features:

1. Curing agent 1, 3-BAC, AEP, IPDA, D-230 and other necessary solvents for modification;

2. The best diluent: light color, light smell, low VOC emission;

3. The safest epoxy diluent;

4. It is very compatible with epoxy resin industrial additive resin, has a plasticizing effect and will not migrate;

5. It has good hydrophobicity, which can significantly improve the gloss of the coating and reduce the whitening phenomenon;

6. It can be used as an epoxy accelerator and compatibilizer to promote the reaction between epoxy resin and amine;

Application fields:

Benzyl alcohol can be used in epoxy flooring, epoxy potting, epoxy solvent-free coatings, epoxy jewelry glue, amine curing agent modification, etc.

Things to note:

Benzyl alcohol needs to be stored in the dark, otherwise it will turn yellow; it can only be used in epoxy resin/amine curing systems, especially not in epoxy resin/anhydride systems; the amount added must be controlled, because benzyl alcohol The addition of benzyl alcohol will reduce the mechanical properties, solvent resistance and chemical resistance of the cured product, so the proportion of addition needs to be determined based on actual requirements. In addition, benzyl alcohol can significantly increase the curing speed, so this needs to be considered. In practical applications of benzyl alcohol, many manufacturers use benzyl alcohol as a diluent, especially for diluting curing agents.
