Structure, Properties, Application and Synthesis of N-(n-butyl)-3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane

Structure, Properties, Application and Synthesis of N-(n-butyl)-3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane
The structure of N-(n-butyl)-3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane coupling agent is characterized by the substitution of one hydrogen on the amino group by n-butyl, which endows the coupling agent with good hydrophobicity and high elasticity, and at the same time effectively inhibits yellowing of the amino group.

N-(n-butyl)-3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane is a monoamino silane coupling agent with a reactive sec-ammonia functional group and three hydrolyzable alkoxyl groups (methoxy). This dual reactivity is one of the core features of the coupling agent, which makes it useful in a variety of applications.
Lively sec-ammonia functional group: This functional group is capable of reacting chemically with functional groups (e.g. hydroxyl, carboxyl, isocyanate groups, etc.) in a wide range of inorganic materials and organic polymers to form strong chemical bonds, thus enhancing the bonding between the inorganic material and the organic polymer.

Hydrolyzable alkoxy groups (methoxy): These groups generate silanol groups (Si-OH) under hydrolysis conditions (e.g., in humid environments or in the presence of water as a catalyst), which are capable of forming hydrogen bonds with hydroxyl groups on the surfaces of inorganic materials (e.g., glass, oxide layers on metal surfaces, fillers, etc.) or further dehydrating and condensing to form covalent bonds (silicone-oxygen bonds, Si-O-Si), thus enhancing the interaction between the coupling agent and the inorganic material. This enhances the interaction between the coupling agent and the inorganic material.
Bidirectional Chemical Reactivity: Through the two reaction mechanisms described above, N-(n-butyl)-3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane coupling agents are able to bridge the gap between inorganic materials and organic polymers, dramatically increasing the degree of bonding, adhesion and compatibility between them. This bi-directional chemical reactivity is at the heart of the coupling agent’s function.

Improved performance: As a result of the above, the coupling agent is able to significantly improve the mechanical properties of resin matrix composites (e.g. flexural strength, tensile strength, etc.) as well as the adhesive strength and water resistance of resin coatings.
Various applications: Due to its unique dual reactivity and wide applicability, N-(n-butyl)-3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane coupling agent can be used as coupling agent, adhesion promoter, curing agent and surface modifier of pigment and filler in different applications.
The hydrolysis group of N-(n-butyl)-3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane is trimethoxysilane, and its hydrolysis speed is significantly faster than that of triethoxysilane, which can provide faster reaction and curing speed, but its hydrolysis reaction by-product is methanol, which is a little less environmentally friendly.
