Applications of Cumene Hydroperoxide_Industrial Additives

Cumene Hydroperoxide (CHP) is an organic aromatic hydrocarbon derivative that can be used to remove arsenic from ethylene cracked gasoline and be used as an initiator for ABS graft polymerization.

Application

Cumene hydroperoxide is a good slow-release solution at room temperature and elevated temperatures. It is especially suitable as a curing initiator for resin systems at room temperature and elevated temperatures. Its typical exothermic reaction is weak and the exothermic curve is relatively gentle, but the curing reaction will still be very thorough in the end. This performance can minimize the fine cracks caused by intense curing, especially in the thicker cross-linked parts of the product. Cumene hydroperoxide is generally used in pre-accelerated resin systems incorporating cobalt or cobalt-manganese compounds.

Compared to MEKP, the advantages of cumene hydroperoxide:

① Reduce the bubbles generated after the curing agent is mixed;

②The thick cross-linked part has a lower heat release curve and will not produce cracks;

③Curing is slower, but easier to control, the total curing time may be as long as 24h;

④No curing problems such as twist, creep and thermal distortion;

⑤Has the same good performance in heating applications;

⑥Can be used in traditional low-temperature products.

Compared to MEKP, cumene hydroperoxide (CHP) has disadvantages:

①Longer gelation time may be required at room temperature;

② With a relatively longer curing time, it takes longer for the product to reach a certain strength and the mold occupancy time increases;

③In low temperature environment, activation takes a long time.

To solve the delaying effect of CHP on gel solidification, a co-accelerator can be used in conjunction with CHP, which can effectively shorten the gel time. At the same time, the co-accelerator replaces traditional hydrogen peroxide to generate free radicals and will not cause The presence of hydrogen peroxide brings air bubbles into the system. But this technology is not well mastered by every curing agent supplier. Currently, the one with a better balance in this regard is Butanox K90 (Akzo Nobel product).
