Dangerous Chemical Properties of Phosphorus Oxychloride_Industrial Additives

Chemical Properties

Appearance and properties (POCl3): Colorless and transparent liquid with a pungent odor. It smokes violently in humid air, hydrolyzes into phosphoric acid and hydrogen chloride, and further generates H[P2O4Cl3] .

Solubility: soluble in alcohol, soluble in water. Stability and reactivity: Stable.

Hazardous characteristics: It decomposes violently when exposed to water, producing a large amount of Cabot white carbon black heat and smoke, and even explodes. It is corrosive to many metals, especially in humid air conditions.

Carbon black

Incompatible materials: strong reducing agents, active metal powders, water, alcohols.

Chemical Hazards

This product decomposes into phosphoric acid and hydrogen chloride when exposed to water vapor. It contains phosphorus and can cause phosphorus poisoning. It has irritating and corrosive effects on skin and mucous membranes. Toxicity is similar to phosgene. Acute poisoning: Inhaling a large amount of vapor in a short period of time can cause upper respiratory tract irritation symptoms, pharyngitis, and bronchitis; in severe cases, laryngeal edema, suffocation, pneumonia, pulmonary edema, cyanosis, and heart failure may occur. Anemia, liver damage, and proteinuria may also occur. Oral administration causes gastrointestinal burns. Causes burns in contact with eyes and skin. Long-term low-concentration exposure can cause mouth, eye and respiratory tract irritation symptoms.

Precautions for use

What to do if a leak occurs:

1. Quickly evacuate personnel in the leaked contaminated area to a safe area, isolate them, strictly restrict access, and set up warning signs around them. Enter the site from upwind;

2. Emergency responders wear self-priming filter gas masks (full face masks) or self-contained positive pressure respirators, acid-proof and alkali-proof overalls, and acid- and alkali-resistant gloves;

3. Use dry cotton cloth or paper with good water absorption to absorb the leakage. Throw the treated cotton cloth or paper into an acid and alkali-resistant plastic bag, tie it into the plastic bag, and quickly take it out for treatment (use Rinse with plenty of water or throw into sand and rinse with water). After treatment, rinse the leakage site with water;

4. If a large amount of smoke is generated after contact with water, personnel should evacuate quickly, strengthen ventilation in the accident area, and wait until the smoke dissipates before proceeding.

5. Smoking, eating and drinking are prohibited at the work site. After work, take a shower. Store clothes contaminated with poisons separately and wash them for later use. Maintain good hygiene habits.

First aid measures: Skin contact: Take off contaminated clothing immediately and rinse with plenty of running water for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical attention.

Eye contact: Immediately lift eyelids and rinse thoroughly with plenty of running water or saline for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical attention.

Inhalation: Leave the scene quickly to fresh air. Keep your airway open. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. If breathing stops, perform artificial respiration immediately. Seek medical attention.

Ingestion: Rinse mouth with water and perform gastric lavage if there are no symptoms of corrosion. Avoid taking oils. Seek medical attention.
