Reactint® colorants are a unique product developed by Milliken Chemical Company for coloring polyurethanes and other thermoset resins.

Reactint® colorants are reactive polymeric colorants that contain grafted polyol coloring groups. This allows Reactint® colorants to participate in the polymerization reaction of polyurethanes.

Reactint® colorants are the most widely used polyurethane coloring systems worldwide. Unlike pigment pastes, which are solid dispersions in the liquid phase, Reactint® colorants are 100% homogeneous liquids that are soluble in polyols and do not stratify, flocculate or settle over time.

Thanks to this pure liquid nature, Reactint® can be mixed in-line with other raw materials such as polyols when producing polyurethane foams or resins, allowing for color matching and color changes without downtime during production. Polyurethane manufacturers can easily match any color by having only five base Reactint® colors.

Why color polyurethanes?

Color is a very powerful tool in product marketing. At Milliken, we’ve always believed that color makes a better product, and that better color makes a better product. In polyurethane applications, color can be used to create industry value in the following ways.

Differentiation and customer appeal

– Color is a key differentiator in some markets

– Color can increase customer appeal

– Customers associate color with value

Color Associations

– Green = fresh, clean and naturally pleasing

– Pink = relaxed and inviting

– Purple = exotic and energetic

– Blue = Vibrant and gorgeous

– Orange = optimistic, happy and energetic

Industry Identity

– Narrow spacing

– Density identification

Benefits of using color

– Conceals stains, yellowing and surface damage

– Coordinates product and packaging colors

– Allows visual identification of products

– Consumers can associate color with the value of the product

Why use Reactint® colorants?

Better color… Better cost efficiency

– High color intensity

Significantly higher than pigments by 3 to 5 times

– High cost effectiveness

Our color matching experts can mix the colors you need in the most cost-effective way.

– Reduced transitions from color switching High solubility for shorter color switching intervals

– Improves product quality

Eliminates problems common to high dose levels of pigments (such as voids, cracks and delayed onset)

– Reduces color inventory

Virtually any desired color can be made from just a few (3 to 5) Reactint® primary colors.

– Eliminate inventory of discarded products

Customize the colors you need, whenever you need them. Better pigments… Better product appearance and quality

– Deeper and more brilliant color effects

Very high additive levels can be added to achieve deep color effects without affecting the physical properties of the soft foam or resin.

– No color migration or color bleeding

Reactint® is involved in the polyurethane reaction regardless of color shade. It can be locked in the system and will not precipitate out.

– Reduces cracking, pinhole phenomenon

This low viscosity, high solubility colorant product helps reduce cracking that can occur in the production of polyurethanes

– Reduces scorch

Reactint® colorants do not contain harmful heavy metals (e.g., copper, iron, chromium, etc.) and will not cause scorching.

– No effect on polyurethane systems

Reactint® polymeric colorants become part of the polyurethane resin. They do not contain solid components that have a nucleation effect or invite cracking, pinholes; and they have minimal effect on the amount of catalyst added or sponge foaming.

Why Reactint ® colorants?

Better pigments… Better manufacturing process and ease of use

– Easy to clean up

Dissolves in cold water

– No need for deliberate mixing

Homogeneous and polyol-soluble liquid, no settling

– Easy pump transfer and dosing

Low viscosity and high surface tension make Reactint® colorants a convenient color system to use at room temperature.

– Reduced equipment wear and tear

Unlike pigments, these liquid colorants are non-abrasive and will not damage, wear out pumps, nozzles, tank liners, etc.

– Versatility

The same Reactint® colorants can be used in both polyester and polyether systems.

– Product Stability

With each batch, Milliken adheres to the highest standards of operation and complies with ISO 9001 and 14001 certified product facilities to produce a consistent, top quality product.

– Small footprint

Only 5 primary colors are needed to intermix all other colors.

Pigment pastes can delaminate or settle REACTINT® colorants do not delaminate or settle

We have always believed that prosperity must go hand in hand with responsibility. From the early 1900s, when we provided loans to rebuild textile mills destroyed by natural disasters, to the Great Depression, when our capital often served as the sole industrial backbone and job security for a small city, to the present, when we have adopted a sustainable approach to business that is decades ahead of the market, we have always done business with a higher purpose and a vision for the future.
